Short maths episodes and games · ages 4–8

Kids ask why. Dalo finds the math.

Why does my mirror copy me? Why is the other line always faster? Each episode starts with a question from a child's day, names the real maths hiding inside it, and ends with a game to play.

How it works

Watch it, then play it

One idea, two ways in. Each takes a few minutes, so it fits between dinner and bath.

  1. 1

    Watch

A short cartoon episode. Dalo asks a question your child has probably asked too, works it out out loud, and says the real name of the maths.

  2. 2

    Play

A matching game lets your child try the idea with their own fingers. It runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer.

Meet the gang

Dalo and his friends

Dalo does the talking. His friends answer with faces, nods and the occasional snip snip.

Dalo

Octopus · about 5 years old

Curious, cheerful and a little cheeky. He makes honest mistakes and lets kids put him right. His special number is 8, and he counts on his legs.

"Let's find the math!"

Pinchy

Crab · Dalo's best friend

Proud of his big claws and a bit sneaky around cookies. Quick to sulk, quicker to make up.

Snip snip!

Star

Starfish · shy and sweet

Waves with one point, hugs anything she's given and does a happy spin when an answer is right.

*happy spin*

Bubbles

Fish · small and speedy

Darts in, catches things and zooms off again. Never touches the sand, always trails a few bubbles.

Blub!

Real maths, named out loud

It starts with their questions

Children don't ask for counting drills. They ask why the mirror copies them and why the other queue always moves. Dalo starts there, so the maths arrives as an answer to something they already wanted to know.

It uses the proper words

Every episode says the real name of the idea: reflection symmetry, remainders, fair sharing. Children hear the words early and recognise them when they meet them again in class.

It gives you something to talk about

Each kids' episode has a grown-up partner on The Math Behind It, a channel that explains the same idea for adults. You both know the question, so you can talk it over at dinner.

I'm a mathematician and a PhD engineer. I started writing down every "why?" my son asked, and those questions became Dalo's episodes.
